Position Overview
Are you interested in energy justice and eager for hands-on research experience? I'm looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented undergraduate student to assist with my dissertation research on how electric utilities integrate energy justice principles into their planning processes. This position offers a unique opportunity to build valuable research skills while receiving personalized mentorship and guidance to support your academic and professional growth. You'll also contribute to meaningful work that impacts the lives of millions of people struggling to access clean and affordable energy.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in gathering data from public utility commission websites and other relevant sources.
Perform basic data entry and ensure data accuracy.
Help with qualitative data analysis using NVivo (training provided).
Update the project website with relevant content.
Perform literature searches and gather supplementary information to support the research (secondary, depending on willingness).
Assist in preparing manuscripts and presentations (secondary, depending on willingness).
Commit to working 5 hours per week for at least one semester, along with attending a one-hour weekly meeting.
Qualifications
Current junior or seniors studying public administration or related fields, including public policy, political science, environmental studies, and urban planning.
Eager to learn new research skills and commit to the project
Interest in energy and environmental topics
Able to work independently and manage time effectively
Familiarity with Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets)
This is an ongoing project with the potential for involvement over multiple semesters. However, the student must commit to working 5 hours per week for at least one semester.
Your enthusiasm for learning and commitment to the project are what matter most. We'll work on everything else together!

Three credit hours for KU students
For students majoring in Public Administration or Law & Society, there is an opportunity to enroll in SPAA 692: Research Experience (3 credit hours).
For students in other degree programs, such as Sociology or Political Science, permission from that respective unit will be required. Additionally, it is essential to ensure that the independent study aligns with the student's degree plan—your Jayhawk advisor can assist with confirming this.
